Since its inception in Beirut in the summer of 2021, Art, Ecology, and the Commons has woven the concept of collectivity, blending art, education, and nature as its core pillars. For the second edition of AR LIVRE ARTE LIVRE in Rio de Janeiro, we return to Aterro do Flamengo Park, a symbol of modernist legacy.
During our research, the “Playground Pavilion,” designed by architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy and originally meant for children before becoming the Carmen Miranda Museum, stood out. This space, with its rich landscape and modernist roots, is an ideal setting for addressing ecology and commons, central themes of this series. Our public artworks in the garden aim to spark a dialogue, not only revisiting the past but imagining the future of this area.
Through contemporary art interventions and public discussions, we invite reflections on the park’s role in collective care and public life. The selected videos further activate artistic possibilities in the unique tropical space of Carmen Miranda. As we celebrate children on this Cosme e Damião day in Brazil, we also dedicate this edition to the innocent children and communities suffering from the ongoing genocide and ecocide in the Middle East.
